Close contest doesn’t go in Mountaineers favour

WELLAND, Ont. – Three of the five sets between the Mohawk Mountaineers men's volleyball team and the Niagara Knights required extra points, but ultimately the match did not favour Mohawk.

In the opening set, the Mountaineers led 23-21 and looked to have the momentum to jump out to a positive start. The Knights would battle back to even the set 24-24 after a Mohawk set point. Niagara would take the lead three times to receive set point, but each time Mohawk responded to tie it. However, at 27-27 the Knights would get consecutive points to go up 1-0 in the match, winning set one 29-27.

Set two would be another lengthy one despite the Mountaineers looking in control when they led 18-14. Niagara even the set up with four consecutive points as the two teams would continue to trade points. The Mountaineers earned set point at 24-23, but the Knights responded had took control at 25-24. Mohawk responded to put themselves in position for a set win with a 26-25 lead, but again, Niagara answered back for a 27-26 lead. From there the Mountaineers registered three straight to even the match 1-1 with a 29-27 set two win.

In set three, Mohawk pulled away with a 16-11 lead and this time held control with the momentum. The Mountaineers won the set 25-18 and led 2-1 in the match.

Set four was another back and forth affair with the two teams tied 16-16. Niagara would score four straight and shut the door with a 25-20 victory, and forcing a fifth set.

The final set was the most dramatic of them all. Mohawk held match point with a 14-12 lead only for Niagara to bring it to a tie with two consecutive scores. Into extra play, Mohawk held set point three times but could not shut the door. It was at 20-19 in favour of the Knights that the match finally ended with the Mountaineers on the wrong side of the scoreboard, losing 21-19.

Dean Zicari (Burlington, Ont.) led Mohawk with 12 kills, Brecken Morrison (Stouffville, Ont.) had 11 and Alex Jurak (St. Catharines, Ont.) finished with 10. Noah Bouchard (Oakville, Ont.) finished the match with a career-high 42 assists.

Mohawk next opportunity to bounce back will be January 18 when they host the Redeemer Royals at 3 p.m.
