Mountaineers overpower Royals with clean sweep victory

HAMILTON, Ont. – The Mohawk Mountaineers men's volleyball team took care of business with a 3-0 victory over the Redeemer Royals, snapping a two-game losing streak.
 
Mohawk held a slight two-point advantage early in set one, eventually growing their lead to six, 15-9. The Mountaineers would not stumble the remainder of the set, holding on for a 25-18 win.
 
In set two it would be the Royals going out in front 15-11 to force a Mountaineers timeout. Out of the huddle, Redeemer held on to momentum to get out in front 19-14 and looked in complete control at 23-19. The Royals held set point at 24-21, but after a Mountaineer timeout, Mohawk stormed back to even the set 24-24. It would be the Mountaineers defence that would set them up for a set point at 25-24 after a block, which was followed by a Royals unforced error to give Mohawk the 26-24 victory and a 2-0 match lead.
 
Redeemer's offense continued strong play into set three as they took an early 7-3 lead. The Mountaineers would not go away easily as the match went back and forth after the two teams were even at 10-10. Mohawk held a 21-20 advantage forcing a Redeemer timeout, and out of the break it would be all Mountaineers with four of the next six points for a 25-22 victory to closeout the match.
 
Noah Bouchard (Oakville, Ont.) had a strong game spreading the Mohawk offense around with 21 assists. Brecken Morrison (St. Catharines, Ont.) led the team with seven kills.
 
The Mountaineers will be back in action on January 24 when they host the Boreal Vipers for an 8 p.m. start time.
