Mountaineers men’s volleyball clinch playoffs with win over Vipers

Box Score HAMILTON, Ont. – The Mohawk Mountaineers men's volleyball team secured an OCAA playoff spot following a 3-0 win over the Boreal Vipers.

Mohawk and Boreal played two competitive sets, starting with the first set. The Mountaineers held onto a small two-point lead throughout the opening set, eventually growing their advantage to four, 13-9. However, the Vipers continued to hang around, tying the set 21-21, and after two consecutive Mountaineer points, the set was again tied 23-23. Mohawk would answer with two straight again, to win the set 25-23.

Set two saw Boreal hold an early 9-6 advantage. Mohawk would climb back into the set to lead 15-14 and would hold on for the remainder of the set, winning 25-20 and leading the match 2-0.

In set three, the Mountaineers jumped out to a 10-2 lead to force a Vipers timeout. Boreal began to chip away at the Mohawk lead, getting to within two. The Mountaineers then scored three in a row to lead 20-15 as the Vipers called their final timeout of the set. Out of the break, Mohawk scored five of the next six to conclude the match and get the win.

Brecken Morrison led the Mountaineers offense with nine kills. Cole Crowder (Milton, Ont.) had 19 assists in the contest.

Mohawk will prepare for their next match quickly, as they host the Cambrian Shield tomorrow (January 25) at 3 p.m.
