Box Score HAMILTON, Ont. – Wednesday night's men's volleyball matchup between the Mohawk Mountaineers and Niagara Knights carried major playoff implications in the tightly contested OCAA West Division.
Entering the match, just two wins separated the third-seeded Humber Hawks and the eighth-seeded Knights. Mohawk sat fourth at 8-6, while Redeemer, Conestoga and St. Clair were all tied at 8-7.
Mohawk delivered a 3-0 sweep of Niagara to improve to 9-6, guaranteeing it will finish no lower than sixth in the standings. The Mountaineers also remain in contention to catch the second-seeded Fanshawe Falcons, who are 10-5.
The match had a playoff atmosphere from the opening serve, with both teams trading points early in the first set. Mohawk gained momentum midway through, building a 17-12 lead. Niagara closed the gap to 23-21, but the Mountaineers held on for a 25-21 win.
Mohawk again took control in the second set, jumping out to a 15-11 lead and maintaining it to secure a 25-20 victory.
The Mountaineers started strong in the third set, taking a 6-1 advantage and holding firm the rest of the way to complete the sweep with a 25-21 win.
Alex Jurak (St. Catharines, Ont.) led Mohawk with 12 kills, Marthus Guedes (Sao Paulo, Brazil) added 11, and Cole Crowder (Milton, Ont.) recorded 32 assists.
Mohawk will learn its playoff positioning Saturday after closing the regular season against the Fanshawe Falcons at 3 p.m. in London, Ont.
