Mountaineers come up short versus No. 13 Knights

HAMILTON, Ont. – Mohawk Mountaineers women's basketball held a late lead versus the No. 13 nationally ranked Niagara Knights, but ultimately came up short, losing 66-61.

The Mountaineers started out shooting the ball well, scoring at a 46.7 per cent rate from the field in the first quarter. Angong Jacob (Calgary, AB) was the hot hand, scoring 12 points in the opening quarter as Mohawk held a 26-21 lead.

In the second quarter, the Mountaineers scoring went cold as the Knights won the quarter on a 22-8 run and took a 43-34 lead at halftime.

Coming out of halftime, Mohawk lost Jacob for the game with 8:29 left in the third quarter as the guard fouled out, leaving the Mountaineers shorthanded for a majority of the second half.

Mohawk continued to play with high intensity as they chipped away at Niagara's lead. By the end of the third, the Knights held a slim 52-49 advantage.

It was with 3:10 remaining in the game when Mohawk regained the lead, going up 61-60.

However, the Mountaineers depth would only get more depleted as Maddie Anderson (Whitby, Ont.), Kendra Oliver (Ajax, Ont.) and Malak Dahawy (Waterloo, Ont.) would all foul out, forcing Mohawk to play five-on-four with 13 seconds remaining and Niagara leading 63-61.

The Mountaineers held a couple possessions in the final seconds, but could not score to bring the game even.

Tiffany Williams (Hamilton, Ont.) led the Mohawk offense with 17 points on a perfect six-of-six shooting. Oliver added her seventh double-double of the season with 12 points and 11 rebounds.

The Mountaineers will be back in action on January 15 when they host the Humber Hawks at 6 p.m.
