Mountaineers victorious at home versus No. 10 Hawks

HAMILTON, Ont. – The Mohawk Mountaineers women's basketball team pulled away in the fourth quarter to secure a 74-60 victory over the No. 10 nationally ranked Humber Hawks.  
 
It was an evenly contested first quarter, with both teams shooting 37.5 per cent from the field. Humber held a slight lead at the end of the opening frame, 21-18.
 
The Hawks extended their lead to six points with 6:18 left in the second quarter. However, the Mountaineers responded with a 7-0 run, taking a one-point advantage at 33-32. After trading baskets, two made free throws from Humber put them back on top 37-36 at halftime.
 
Humber's largest lead came early in the third quarter, when they went up by seven. Mohawk ten found their offensive rhythm, going on an 8-0 run to take a 48-47 lead. The Hawks quickly regained a two-point advantage, but the Mountaineers answered back. Angong Jacob (Calgary, AB) hit a key jumper, followed by a three-pointer from Malak Dahawy (Waterloo, Ont.) at the buzzer, giving Mohawk a 55-52 lead heading into the final period.
 
The Mountaineers never relinquished the lead in the fourth quarter, starting with a 10-0 run to go up by 13 points. Mohawk's largest lead came with 1:36 left, when they were ahead by 16 points, and they held on to close out the game for the victory.
 
Kendra Oliver (Ajax, Ont.) had a standout performance, recording a season-high 26 points and 18 rebounds for her eighth double-double of the campaign. Jacob contributed 18 points, while Dahawy added 15 off the bench. Maddie Anderson (Whitby, Ont.) recorded a unique double-double with 11 rebounds and 10 assists.
 
The Mountaineers will have a full week off before their next game on January 22, when they travel to Ancaster, Ont. to face the Redeemer Royals. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
