Mountaineers secure winning record with victory over Royals

ANCASTER, Ont. – With a 76-52 victory over the Redeemer Royals, the Mohawk Mountaineers women's basketball team has secured a winning season for the second consecutive year.

Mohawk entered the contest with a 8-4 record with four remaining games in the campaign, and with their ninth win, they can no longer finish below .500 for the 2024-25 season.

The Mountaineers got off to a strong offensive start versus the Royals, shooting an outstanding 68.4 per cent from the field in the opening quarter. Mohawk led 29-14, with 13 of the points coming from Angong Jacob (Calgary, AB).

Mohawk's offensive heater came to a halt in the second quarter as they were 23.8 per cent from the field, but they still took a 14-point lead into halftime.

In the second half, the Mountaineers relied on their defence to continue to grow their lead. Redeemer shot 24 per cent from the field in the final 20 minutes, making only six field goals.

It was Mohawk's success forcing Redeemer turnovers that led to the 24-point win. The Royals 30 turnovers resulted in 28 Mountaineer points.

Jacob finished the contest with a career-high 29 points on 14-of-27 shooting. Kendra Oliver (Ajax, Ont.) had her double-double streak of three-games halted after she finished with 14 points and six rebounds. However, Malak Dahawy (Waterloo, Ont.) had her fourth straight double-digit scoring performance off the bench with 16 points.

Mohawk will closeout their home portion of the schedule next weekend when they host the St. Clair Saints and Lambton Lions on back-to-back days. Action versus the Saints takes place on Jan. 31 at the David Barley Athletic and Recreation Centre, with tip-off at 6 p.m.
