Mountaineers storm past Saints with home win

Box Score HAMILTON, Ont. – The Mohawk Mountaineers women's basketball team picked up its 10^th victory of the season, defeating the St. Clair Saints 66-42.

With the win Mohawk clinched a top-four seed in the OCAA West Division, guaranteeing themselves a home playoff game in the OCAA qualifying round.

Despite the victory, the Mountaineers got off to a slow start versus the Saints, shooting 33 per cent from the field in the opening quarter. St. Clair benefitted from seven Mohawk turnovers and led 19-9.

The Mountaineers continued to trail by 10 at the midway point of the second quarter, but they would close out the half with a 15-0 run to lead 29-24. Mohawk held St. Clair to five points in the second and one-of-17 from the field.

In the third quarter, the Mountaineers lock down defence continued as they played to a 22-8 run to increase their lead to 19. St. Clair was held to 23.1 per cent shooting in the quarter, while Mohawk knocked down four threes.

The Mountaineers largest lead of the game came with 3:48 left in the fourth quarter when they led by 26. Maddie Anderson (Whitby, Ont.) knocked down three triples for Mohawk in the final frame to ensure the lead stayed intact.

Anderson finished with a game-high 18 points with six made threes. Kendra Oliver (Ajax, Ont.) picked up her ninth double-double of the season with 12 points and 13 rebounds, and Angong Jacob (Calgary, AB) provided 12 points.

Mohawk's home portion of the 2024-25 regular season will close out tomorrow (February 1) when they host the Lambton Lions for a 1 p.m. tip-off.
