No. 2 Mountaineers defeated at home; will play for OCAA bronze

HAMILTON, Ont. – The No. 2 nationally ranked Mohawk Mountaineers women's basketball team saw its hopes of repeating as OCAA champions come to an end with a 52-50 semi-final loss to the Fanshawe Falcons on Saturday.

Fanshawe's two-point victory came after a comeback, with Mohawk leading 19-11 after the first quarter. The Falcons trimmed the lead to four before halftime.

The Falcons entered the fourth quarter trailing by one but pulled ahead early in the final frame, taking their first lead since going up 4-2 to open the game. Mohawk regained the lead and went ahead by four with 3:09 remaining, but Fanshawe responded and reclaimed the advantage with 15 seconds left.

After Malak Dahawy (Waterloo, Ont.) briefly put the Mountaineers back in front, Fanshawe hit a corner three with 2.6 seconds remaining to secure the win.

Dahawy was named Mohawk's player of the game after scoring 18 points in 16 minutes.

Neither team shot particularly well. Fanshawe finished at 32.1 per cent from the field, while Mohawk shot 26 per cent.

Kendra Oliver (Ajax, Ont.) recorded a double-double for Mohawk, finishing with 15 points and 13 rebounds.

The Mountaineers will play for the bronze medal Sunday at 1 p.m. against the Loyalist Lancers, who lost their semi-final 77-37 to the Humber Hawks.

Mohawk will look to capture its 25th OCAA medal. The Mountaineers are currently tied with Humber for the second-most medals in conference history, one behind Fanshawe.
