No. 2 Mountaineers advance to OCAA semifinals with 15-point win

HAMILTON, Ont. – The No. 2 nationally ranked Mohawk Mountaineers have advanced to the OCAA semifinals for the second consecutive year with a 66-51 victory over the Lambton Lions.

Mohawk continues its title defence after capturing the provincial championship last season.

The Mountaineers started slowly, shooting 29.4 per cent from the field in the opening quarter. Despite the sluggish start, they trailed by no more than four points and faced a 17-15 deficit after one.

Lambton's largest lead came with 4:04 remaining in the first half, when it led by six. Mohawk responded with a 10-2 run to close the half and take a 33-31 lead into the break.

After the teams traded leads early in the third quarter, the score was tied 36-36 with seven minutes remaining. A 6-0 run gave Mohawk a 42-36 advantage, and it did not relinquish the lead. The Mountaineers held Lambton to seven points in the quarter to take a 44-38 lead into the fourth.

Mohawk took control on the offensive glass in the final frame, grabbing six offensive rebounds. The Mountaineers extended their lead to a game-high 18 points with 1:12 remaining and cruised to the win.

Mohawk outrebounded Lambton 48-31, including 21 offensive rebounds.

Kendra Oliver (Ajax, Ont.) led the way with 15 points and 15 rebounds. Maddie Anderson (Whitby, Ont.) added 13 points, while Joanna Smith (Simcoe, Ont.) and Tiffany Williams (Hamilton, Ont.) each scored 10.

With the win, Mohawk will host the OCAA championship tournament, scheduled for the weekend of March 6-8. The Mountaineers will face the Fanshawe Falcons in a semifinal matchup.

As of publication, Mohawk, Fanshawe and the Humber Hawks have secured spots in the championship field. The fourth team will be determined Sunday when the Loyalist Lancers host the St. Clair Saints.
