Mountaineers begin 2025-26 season with road victory

ANCASTER, Ont. – The Mohawk Mountaineers women's basketball team began their 2025-26 season on Friday night, defeating the Redeemer Royals 80-58.
 
An 8-0 run in the opening quarter helped Mohawk take a nine point after the first 10 minutes. The Mountaineers increased their lead as high as 14 in the second, but the Royals closed the half on their own run to cut the Mohawk lead to 41-36.
 
The Mountaineers intensified their defence in the third, holding the Royals to four points and 14.3 per cent shooting. Mohawk outscored Redeemer by 14 in the quarter and extended their lead to 59-40.
 
In the fourth quarter the Mountaineers lead extended to a game-high 24 points, helping secure the win.
 
Mohawk played smart with the basketball all game, only turning the ball over 13 times and forcing 30 turnovers from Redeemer.
 
Kendra Oliver (Ajax, Ont.) led the way with her first double-double of the season with 24 points and 11 rebounds. Rachel Guanzon (Guelph, Ont.) scored 11, and Joanna Smith (Simcoe, Ont.) and Tiffany Williams (Hamilton, Ont.) had 10 points each.
 
Mohawk's next contest will be their home opener on Oct. 25 when they host the Niagara Knights. Tip-off is scheduled for 4 p.m.
