Brampton, Ont. – The Mohawk Mountaineers men's basketball team stormed back from a slow start to edge the Sheridan Bruins 78-75 on Wednesday night.

The Mountaineers fell behind 12-0 to open the game but responded with six straight points to cut the deficit in half. Mohawk trailed 25-21 after the first quarter.

The second quarter saw both teams trade runs. Mohawk opened the frame with seven unanswered points to take a 28-25 lead and stretched that advantage to eight. Leading 38-31 with just over three minutes left in the half, the Mountaineers' defence faltered as Sheridan closed on a 13-3 run to take a 44-40 lead into halftime.

The Mountaineers drew even three times in the third quarter but were unable to pull ahead, trailing 63-58 entering the fourth. Down six early in the final frame, Mohawk responded with an 11-2 run to take a 73-70 lead. The Mountaineers held firm in the closing minutes to secure the comeback win.

Jerry Jr. Mercury (Scarborough, Ont.) led Mohawk with 13 points, while Kazim Raza (Markham, Ont.) added 12 points and six rebounds. Dante Richards (Oakville, Ont.) provided a spark off the bench, contributing 11 points.

The Mountaineers will look to extend their early-season win streak to four when they travel to North Bay, Ont., on Saturday to face the Canadore Panthers. Tip-off is scheduled for 4 p.m.
