BRAMPTON, Ont. – The Mohawk Mountaineers women's basketball team continued their strong start to the 2025-26 season with an 83-54 victory over the Sheridan Bruins on Wednesday night.
The Mountaineers have now opened the campaign with three straight wins, each by a margin of at least 22 points. It marks the first time since the 2017-18 season that Mohawk has recorded three consecutive wins by 20 points or more.
Both teams struggled to find their rhythm early, with the game tied 6-6 more than six minutes into the opening quarter. Mohawk then held Sheridan scoreless over the final 3:46 of the frame and closed on a 9-0 run to take control.
The Mountaineers stretched their lead to 12 points in the second quarter, but the Bruins responded to cut the deficit to five. Mohawk outscored Sheridan 12-6 over the final five minutes of the half to take a 34-22 advantage into the break.
Mohawk's offence caught fire in the second half, shooting 54.5 per cent from the field. The Mountaineers led by 19 after three quarters and built their largest lead of the night at 33 points with just over three minutes remaining.
Defensively, Mohawk limited Sheridan to 21.7 per cent shooting, forced 37 turnovers and held a 36-18 edge in points in the paint.
Third-year guard Joanna Smith, in her first season with Mohawk, scored a career-high 26 points. Maddie Anderson added 10 points off the bench in her season debut, narrowly missing a double-double with eight rebounds.
The Mountaineers will now have more than a week off before hosting the St. Clair Saints on Nov. 7 at 6 p.m. at the David Braley Athletic and Recreation Centre.
