No. 4 Mountaineers win streak extends to four, defeat Saints by 33-points

HAMILTON, Ont. – The No. 4 nationally ranked Mohawk Mountaineers women's basketball team has opened the 2025-26 season with four consecutive wins, marking the first time since 2017-18 the program has started 4-0.

Mohawk's latest victory came Friday night in the first half of a back-to-back, as the Mountaineers defeated the St. Clair Saints 76-43.

St. Clair opened the game with back-to-back three-pointers to take a 6-2 lead, but Mohawk responded with a 7-0 run before the Saints briefly went back ahead 11-9. Sydney Drain (Tweed, Ont.) knocked down a three to restore the lead for the Mountaineers, who would stay in front the rest of the way.

Mohawk started the second quarter on a 19-2 run, stretching its advantage to 21 points. The Saints were limited to seven points on 16.7 per cent shooting in the frame, as the Mountaineers took a 41-19 lead into halftime.

The Mountaineers' largest lead came midway through the third quarter, up by 41 with 5:04 remaining. Neither team shot the ball well in the fourth, with Mohawk hitting 28.6 per cent from the field and St. Clair connecting on just 10.5 per cent. Despite the cold shooting, Mohawk cruised to the 33-point win.

The Mountaineers went 6-for-23 from three-point range and were outrebounded 48-41, but forced 29 turnovers that led to 35 points.

Four Mohawk players finished in double figures, led by Maddie Anderson (Whitby, Ont.) with a game-high 14 points, seven assists and six rebounds. Joanna Smith (Simcoe, Ont.) and Drain each added 13, Tiffany Williams (Hamilton, Ont.) had 12, and Kendra Oliver (Ajax, Ont.) contributed 11 points and 11 rebounds off the bench.

The Mountaineers return to action Saturday afternoon when they host the Lambton Lions at 1 p.m.
