HAMILTON, Ont. – The Mohawk Mountaineers women's volleyball team opened with a first-set victory but couldn't sustain the momentum, falling 3-1 to the Fanshawe Falcons on Saturday.
The Mountaineers built an early three-point lead in the opening set and extended it to 14-9 before withstanding a late push from Fanshawe to win 25-22.
The Falcons responded quickly in the second set, jumping out to a 3-0 lead. Mohawk never recovered and dropped the set 25-16.
Fanshawe continued to control the match in the third, racing out to a 7-2 lead. The Mountaineers again struggled to close the gap and fell 25-14.
Mohawk found its rhythm early in the fourth set, taking a 9-6 lead and holding the advantage until Fanshawe tied the score at 15-15. With the set knotted at 18-18, the Falcons pulled ahead with two straight points. Though Mohawk rallied to within 22-21, Fanshawe sealed the win with a 25-21 set victory.
Kendra Baker (Milton, Ont.) led the Mountaineers with nine kills and 12 digs, while Sofia Spoljar (Hamilton, Ont.) anchored the defence with 19 digs.
Mohawk will aim to snap a three-game skid when they host the Humber Hawks on Nov. 22 at 1 p.m.
