Anderson’s career-high 31 powers No. 4 Mountaineers past No. 7 Hawks

ETOBICOKE, Ont. – Maddie Anderson (Whitby, Ont.) scored a career-high 31 points to lead the No. 4 nationally ranked Mohawk Mountaineers to a 75-60 win over the No. 7 Humber Hawks on Wednesday night.

The victory moves Mohawk to 7-0 and hands Humber (5-1) its first loss of the season. It marks the first time since 1990-91 the Mountaineers have opened a campaign with seven straight wins.

The matchup featured two nationally ranked programs meeting for the first time since the 2024-25 OCAA championship game. Both teams traded extended runs throughout the night.

Trailing 7-5 early, Mohawk responded with a 10-0 run fuelled by back-to-back threes from Anderson. The Hawks answered with a 9-0 run of their own, but the Mountaineers held a 17-16 lead after the first quarter.

Mohawk opened the second with an 9-0 surge, stretching its lead to 26-16. Humber didn't record its first field goal of the quarter until the 3:22 mark, but a late 7-0 run cut the deficit before Mohawk took a 35-29 lead into halftime.

The Hawks tied the game early in the third, but Anderson and Rachel Guanzon responded with threes to restore momentum. Humber later pulled within one, but a 12-1 Mohawk run pushed the lead back to double digits. The Mountaineers led 55-50 after three.

Mohawk broke the game open with a 10-2 run midway through the fourth, building a 14-point cushion the Hawks could not overcome.

Defence proved decisive, as the Mountaineers held Humber to 27.1 per cent shooting. Mohawk finished at 42.6 per cent despite committing 24 turnovers to Humber's 20.

Anderson's 31 points surpassed her previous career-best of 30, set on Nov. 23, 2024, against Lambton.

Off the bench, Kendra Oliver (Ajax, Ont.) posted an 11-point, 17-rebound double-double. Vanessa Soffee (Fredericton, NB.) added 12 points and five steals, while Tiffany Williams (Hamilton, Ont.) contributed eight points and 12 rebounds.

Mohawk closes the first half of the season on Nov. 27 when it visits the Conestoga Condors. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
