Mountaineers upset No. 11 Hawks in five-set win

HAMILTON, Ont. – The Mohawk Mountaineers men's volleyball team earned their biggest victory of the 2025-26 season Saturday, upsetting the No. 11 nationally ranked Humber Hawks 3-2.

Mohawk had dropped 14 of its previous 15 meetings with Humber dating back to 2017-18, with its last win coming on Nov. 26, 2022.

The Mountaineers struck first, using a run of three straight points to take a 4-1 lead in the opening set. They maintained control throughout, stretching the margin to as many as five before closing out a 25-21 win.

Set two featured several lead changes until Humber pulled ahead 17-14. Mohawk called a timeout, but the Hawks kept rolling and took the set 25-19 to tie the match.

The third set remained tight early, but Humber eventually built a 14-10 advantage and continued to press, winning 25-17 to push Mohawk to the brink.

The Mountaineers answered in the fourth, leading 14-11 before Humber rallied to move ahead 18-16. Out of a timeout, Mohawk surged back with five straight points to regain control and went on to win the set 25-20, forcing a fifth.

Mohawk dominated the early stages of the deciding set, racing out to a 6-0 lead behind strong serving from Brecken Morrison (Stouffville, Ont.). The Mountaineers led 8-1 at the side switch before Humber clawed back to within three at 14-11. Mohawk held firm, converting match point to secure the upset victory.

Dean Zicari (Burlington, Ont.) led the Mountaineers with 11 kills. Morrison, who alternated between setter and right-side hitter, recorded 29 assists and seven service aces.

Mohawk will look to build on the win Nov. 26 when they visit the Niagara Knights at 8 p.m.
