Mountaineers drop fifth straight

WELLAND, Ont. – The Mohawk Mountaineers women's volleyball team dropped its fifth straight match Wednesday, falling 3-0 to the Niagara Knights.

In the opening set, Niagara put together four straight points to build a 7-3 lead. Mohawk rallied to go up 12-9, but the Knights answered with a 14-13 advantage and went on to take the set 25-19.

Mohawk came out strong in the second, leading 10-7 before Niagara regained momentum. The Mountaineers fought back to tie it 21-21, and the teams traded points to 23-23. Mohawk earned set point at 24-23, but Niagara responded with two straight for a 25-24 set point of its own. The Mountaineers tied it again, but the Knights closed it out 27-25.

The third set remained tight, with Mohawk holding an early three-point lead before Niagara pulled even. After a 9-9 tie, the teams were level six more times. The Knights eventually pushed ahead to a 24-20 match point. Mohawk cut the deficit to 24-23 with three straight points, but Niagara secured the final point to take the set 25-23.

Avery McConkey (Stratford, Ont.) led Mohawk with a match-high 14 kills.

The Mountaineers close out the first half of the season Nov. 29 when they host the Conestoga Condors at 1 p.m.
