Mountaineers hold off Lions

HAMILTON, Ont. – The Mohawk Mountaineers women's basketball team clinched the third seed in the OCAA West Division following a 56-50 victory over the Lambton Lions.
 
Kendra Oliver (Ajax, Ont.) set a new Mohawk single-season record for rebounds after a 12-rebound performance, giving her 187 rebounds on the campaign. Oliver surpassed Jasmine Kucic, who previously held the record with 179 rebounds in the 2017-18 season.
 
In the contest, the Lions jumped out to a 13-4 advantage in the first five minutes. Mohawk ended the quarter on a 13-2 run to take a 17-15 lead.
 
The second quarter saw back and forth action as the two teams traded buckets. There were a total of five lead changes or ties in the quarter, but the Mountaineers would hold onto their lead and go into halftime up 34-32.
 
Mohawk continued to hold off any Lambton run in the third quarter, extending their lead to 47-40.
 
With two minutes remaining in the game the Lions cut the Mountaineers lead down to five, but that would be as close as they would get as Mohawk pulled out the win.
 
Angong Jacob (Calgary, AB) led the Mountaineers with 29 points. Oliver achieved her 10th double-double of the season with 10 points to go along with her 12 rebounds. Maddie Anderson (Whitby, Ont.) finished with 11 points, six rebounds, six assists and five steals.
 
Mohawk will close out the 2024-25 regular season on February 5 when they travel to London, Ont. to play the Fanshawe Falcons. The game is scheduled to tip-off at 6 p.m.
