Four Mountaineers score in double-digits to advance to OCAA Quarterfinals

HAMILTON, Ont. – The Mohawk Mountaineers men's basketball team received four double-digit scoring performances in their 95-81 victory over the Centennial Colts in the OCAA Qualifying Round. With the win, the Mountaineers advance to the OCAA Quarterfinals.

Mohawk started strong in the first quarter, jumping out to an 8-2 lead. However, back-to-back three-pointers by Centennial evened the score. With 3:46 left in the first, the Mountaineers found themselves trailing 17-13. From that point, Mohawk responded with an 11-0 run to close out the quarter and take a 24-17 lead.

The Mountaineers pushed their lead to 10 on several occasions early in the second quarter, but the Colts kept answering. Leading by eight with 1:53 left in the half, Mohawk closed the frame with six unanswered points to take a 48-34 advantage into halftime.

Centennial fought back in the second half, earning trips to the free-throw line and shooting a perfect 7-of-7 in the third quarter. The Colts won the quarter by seven points, trimming the Mountaineers' lead to just seven heading into the final frame.

Mohawk's fourth-quarter offense was powered by Kazim Raza (Markham, Ont.) and Marko Dosen (Hamilton, Ont.), who combined for 23 of the team's 29 points in the period. The Mountaineers extended their lead to its largest of the game, pulling away from the Colts for the win.

As a team, Mohawk had one of its best free-throw performances of the season, shooting 16-of-18. The Mountaineers also dominated the second-chance points battle, finishing with 20 to Centennial's five.

First-year guard Eltom Adam (Hamilton, Ont.) led the Mountaineers with 22 points. Dosen contributed 21 points and 12 rebounds, while Raivone Young (Halifax, NS) added 19 points. Raza finished with 15 points off the bench.

Mohawk's quarterfinal matchup will be against the OCAA East Division's top-seeded Durham Lords. The two teams will meet on February 22 at 5 p.m. in Oshawa, Ont.
