Second half lifts Mountaineers over Colts; advance to OCAA Quarterfinals

HAMILTON, Ont. – The Mohawk Mountaineers women's basketball team outscored the Centennial Colts by 27 points in the second half, securing a dominant 90-61 victory in the OCAA Qualifying Round.

This marks the second consecutive year the Mountaineers have advanced to the quarterfinals.

Despite a slow start, Mohawk fought through early challenges against Centennial. In the first quarter, the Mountaineers committed nine turnovers, shot just 35 percent from the field, and missed all five of their three-point attempts. However, Centennial also struggled offensively, and Mohawk dominated the rebound battle, 19-7, holding a narrow 16-15 lead after the first frame.

The second quarter saw both teams improve their shooting efficiency, but neither side gained control. The Mountaineers headed into halftime with a slim 40-38 advantage.

Seventeen of the game's 20 lead changes or ties occurred in the first half.

In the third quarter, after the Colts briefly took a 42-41 lead with 7:40 remaining, the Mountaineers responded with a 9-0 run, building an eight-point lead. Mohawk maintained control through the rest of the quarter, finishing up 62-55.

The fourth quarter was all Mohawk, as the Mountaineers erupted for a 28-6 run. Shooting 65 percent from the field while holding Centennial to just 18.8 percent, Mohawk cruised to a comfortable win.

All five Mountaineers starters scored in double digits, with Angong Jacob (Calgary, AB) leading the way with 23 points and nine rebounds. Kendra Oliver (Ajax, Ont.) posted a double-double with 19 points and 20 rebounds, while Donna-Marie Borja (Calgary, AB) nearly recorded a triple-double, contributing 17 points, nine rebounds, and seven assists. Tiffany Williams (Hamilton, Ont.) finished with 13 points, and Maddie Anderson added 11.

The Mountaineers will face the OCAA East Division's second-seeded Georgian Grizzlies in the quarterfinals on February 22 in Barrie, Ont.
