Mountaineers roar past Grizzlies to secure OCAA Semi-Final spot

Box Score BARRIE, Ont. – The Mohawk Mountaineers women's basketball team has advanced to the OCAA Semi-Finals for the first time since the 2017-18 season, securing a dominant 65-51 win over the Georgian Grizzlies.

The Mountaineers made a statement early, storming out to a commanding 19-2 lead in the first quarter. Mohawk's defense stifled the Grizzlies, limiting them to just one-of-14 shooting in the opening frame while forcing eight turnovers.

The defensive pressure continued into the second quarter, with Mohawk outscoring Georgian 12-6 and expanding their lead to 23 points by halftime. The Mountaineers' defense held the Grizzlies to only two-of-16 shooting in the second, but Mohawk also faced struggles offensively, shooting just 25 per cent from the field.

Mohawk built its largest lead of the game, 29 points, with 45 seconds remaining in the third quarter, heading into the final frame with a 49-21 advantage.

Georgian mounted a fierce comeback in the fourth, scoring 30 points and cutting Mohawk's lead to 11 with just 1:09 remaining. However, despite the Grizzlies' late rally, the Mountaineers held firm to seal the win.

Angong Jacob (Calgary, AB) led the way for Mohawk with a game-high 19 points, while Maddie Anderson (Whitby, Ont.) recorded a double-double with 14 points and 15 rebounds.

With the win, the Mountaineers will travel to Ottawa, Ont. next weekend for the OCAA Semi-Finals. Mohawk will face the Fanshawe Falcons on February 28, with the game time yet to be determined.
