Mountaineers men’s curling opens CCAA Championships with win; women fall in opener

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The Mohawk Mountaineers men's curling team kicked off the 2025 CCAA Championships with a win, while the women's team dropped their opening match.

The men's team began the national tournament with a rematch against the Humber Hawks, the same team they defeated in the OCAA gold medal game. The Mountaineers started strong, scoring a single point in the first end. Humber responded with two points in the second, but Mohawk leveled the score at 2-2 after three ends. Humber regained the lead, taking a 4-2 advantage with one point each in the fourth and fifth ends. Mohawk answered with two points in the sixth to tie the game again. Humber took a 5-4 lead in the seventh, but with the hammer in the eighth, the Mountaineers scored three points to seal a 7-5 victory.

Meanwhile, the women's team faced off against the OCAA gold medal-winning Fanshawe Falcons in their opening match. Mohawk found themselves trailing 7-0 after two ends but managed to get on the scoreboard with two points in the third. After Fanshawe made it 8-2 through four ends, the Mountaineers added another two in the fifth to narrow the gap to 8-4. However, Fanshawe scored once in both the sixth and seventh ends, leading Mohawk to concede with a final score of 10-4.

Both Mohawk teams will be back in action on February 25. The women's team will face the Assiniboine Cougars at 10:30 a.m. followed by the Red Deer Queens at 6:30 p.m. For the men action will begin at 2:30 p.m. versus the Sault Cougars and then they will play the Assiniboine Cougars at 10:30 p.m.
