Mountaineers men’s curling clinch spot in national semi-finals

LETHBRIDGE, AB – With one day of round robin play still remaining, the Mohawk Mountaineers men's curling team has secured their spot in the semi-finals of the 2025 CCAA Curling Canada Championship.

On day three of the national championship, Mohawk triumphed over the Red Deer Kings 9-4 and the NAIT Ooks 8-2, maintaining an undefeated record at 5-0.

The Mountaineers jumped out to a 3-0 lead over the Kings in the first end. After Red Deer scored one in the second, Mohawk added two more in the third to extend their lead to 5-1. The Kings fought back, scoring one in the fourth and two in the fifth to narrow the deficit to just one point. However, Mohawk responded with two in the sixth, and after a blank seventh end, they added another two in the eighth for the victory.

In their game against the Ooks, Mohawk surged to a 5-0 lead after three ends. NAIT managed to score one in the fourth and sixth ends, but Mohawk added another point in the fifth, bringing their lead to 6-2 going into the seventh. The Mountaineers finished strong with two more points in the final end to secure the 8-2 win.

Unfortunately, the Mohawk women's team remained winless at the national championship following a 10-2 loss to the Concordia Thunder and an 11-2 defeat to PACWEST.

Against Concordia, Mohawk held a 1-0 lead after the first end but gave up seven combined points in the second and third ends. The Mountaineers scored one in the fourth but conceded two in the fifth and one in the sixth, resulting in a loss.

In their game versus PACWEST, Mohawk found themselves trailing 3-0 after two ends. They cut the deficit to one with two points in the third but could not maintain the momentum. PACWEST scored two in the fourth and three each in the fifth and sixth ends to take an 11-2 lead. Mohawk conceded after the sixth end.

Both teams will complete their round robin play on February 27. The Mountaineers men's team will face RSEQ at 10:30 a.m. and the SAIT Trojans at 6:30 p.m.

For the Mohawk women's team, while their hopes of advancing to the semi-finals have been dashed, they will conclude round robin play with a 2:30 p.m. match against the Humber Hawks and a 10:30 p.m. game against the SAIT Trojans.
