Mountaineers secure home playoff game with win over Falcons

LONDON, Ont. – The Mohawk Mountaineers men's basketball team is guaranteed to host a home playoff game after defeating the Fanshawe Falcons, 79-64.

With the win, the Mountaineers clinched the fourth seed in the OCAA West Division with one game remaining on the season.

In the game, neither team took control in the first quarter, with Mohawk and Fanshawe even at 15-15.

The Mountaineers took control of the game in the second quarter behind Raivone Young's (Halifax, NS) 10 points. Mohawk started the quarter with three consecutive buckets and later grew their lead to as high as 11 in the half. The Mountaineers led 37-30 at halftime.

Mohawk's largest lead of the game came in the third quarter when they led by 26 with 41 seconds left. The third saw the Mountaineers score 28 points on 50 per cent shooting. Defensively, they held the Falcons to 23.5 per cent from the field.

Despite a 24-point advantage to start the fourth, Mohawk cooled off on the offensive side as Fanshawe began to chip away at the lead. The Falcons got within 12 with 6:05 remaining, but the Mountaineers responded with a 9-0 run. There would be no more Fanshawe push after that as Mohawk was able to hold on.

Kazim Raza (Markham, Ont.) led the Mountaineers scoring, coming off the bench for 19 points on six-of-10 shooting and three made threes. Marko Dosen (Hamilton, Ont.) had a double-double with 18 points and 14 rebounds, and Young finished the contest with 15 points.

Mohawk will closeout the 2024-25 regular season on February 9 when they travel to North Bay, Ont. to play the Canadore Panthers at 3 p.m.
