HAMILTON, Ont. – The Mohawk Mountaineers men's and women's curling teams saw their undefeated records fall on day three of the OCAA Championships. Meanwhile, the mixed doubles team improved their record to 4-1 with two victories.
In their first game of the day, the Mountaineer men defeated the Fanshawe Falcons 7-2. Mohawk and Fanshawe were tied 1-1 after two ends. The Mountaineers took control with a single point in both the third and fourth ends, giving them a 4-2 lead. The Falcons responded with one in the fifth. Mohawk then scored one in the sixth before a dominant three-point seventh end, bringing the score to 7-1, which led to Fanshawe conceding.
Next, the Mountaineers faced the Humber Hawks in a rematch of the last four OCAA men's gold medal games. After two scoreless ends, the Hawks took the lead with two points in both the third and fourth ends. Humber added one more in the fifth, with Mohawk responding with one of their own in the sixth. The Hawks sealed the win with a point in the seventh, defeating the Mountaineers 6-1.
The Mohawk women entered day three with a 2-0 record but were handed their first loss by the Humber Hawks, 9-7. The Mountaineers jumped out to a 6-0 lead, scoring three points in both the first and second ends, followed by one more in the third to go up 7-0. However, Humber mounted a comeback, scoring one in the fourth, four in the fifth, and one each in the sixth and seventh to tie the game. The Hawks then secured the win with two points in the eighth.
The mixed doubles team had a strong day, defeating the Niagara-2 Knights 11-0 and Niagara-1 8-4. Against Niagara-2, Mohawk opened with four points in the first end and kept the pressure on, adding one in the second, two in the third, one in the fourth, two in the fifth, and one in the sixth to seal the win. In their match against Niagara-1, Mohawk fell behind 1-0 in the first end but responded with four in the second. The Knights scored one in the third, but Mohawk answered with one of their own in the fourth. After Niagara-1 added one point in both the fifth and sixth ends, the Mountaineers put up three in the seventh to secure the victory.
The final day of round robin play at the OCAA Championships will take place Saturday at the Dundas Valley Golf and Curling Club.
