No. 15 Mountaineers advance to National Semi-Finals with win over No. 3 Mariners

FREDERICTON, NB – The No. 15 nationally ranked Mohawk Mountaineers women's basketball team have secured a spot in the 2025 CCAA National Women's Basketball Championship semi-finals after a hard-fought 62-57 victory over the No. 3 ranked VIU Mariners.

The Mountaineers came out strong, jumping to an early 6-0 lead in the first 1:30 of the game. VIU quickly cut the deficit to one point, but Mohawk responded with a 7-0 run to lead 19-13 at the end of the opening quarter. Mohawk shot an efficient 50 per cent in the first, while holding VIU to just 25 per cent from the field.

In the second quarter, the Mountaineers extended their lead to 11 points in the opening minute, but the Mariners fought back, trimming the gap to just one point at 26-25. Late in the quarter, Mohawk regained control and went into the break with a 35-27 advantage.

The third quarter saw both teams struggle offensively. Mohawk was held to just nine points on 4-of-16 shooting, while VIU also had difficulty from the field but went a perfect six-of-six from the free throw line. The Mountaineers held a slim 44-41 lead heading into the final quarter.

Three minutes into the fourth, VIU once again closed the gap, narrowing Mohawk's lead to 48-46. However, Angong Jacob (Calgary, AB) responded with a crucial 5-0 run, extending the Mountaineers' lead to 53-46 with 6:40 remaining. Mohawk maintained their advantage and sealed the game with a 61-49 lead at the 1:16 mark.

Despite VIU's impressive 20-of-22 shooting from the free throw line, the Mountaineers' defence was stellar, holding the Mariners to just 22.7 per cent shooting overall. Mohawk also dominated the rebounding battle 45-39 and scored 32 points in the paint.

Jacob, named the Mountaineers' Player of the Game, led all scorers with 26 points and grabbed six rebounds. Kendra Oliver (Ajax, Ont.) posted a double-double with 14 points and 16 rebounds.
The Mountaineers will now advance to the CCAA semi-finals on March 13, where they will play at 6 p.m. and await their opponent.
