<p><span style="font-size:14px;"><span style="font-family:verdana;"><strong>FREDERICTON, NB</strong> – The No. 15 nationally ranked Mohawk Mountaineers women's basketball team saw their hopes of competing for the CCAA Championship dashed with a 65-57 defeat to No. 12 ranked St. Mary's Lightning in the semi-final round. The Mountaineers are now relegated to the bronze semi-finals.</span></span></p>
<p data-end="562" data-start="351"><span style="font-size:14px;"><span style="font-family:verdana;">The game began with Mohawk taking an 11-5 lead in the early minutes of the first quarter, but the Lightning quickly responded with a run of their own. The teams were tied 14-14 at the end of the opening quarter.</span></span></p>
<p data-end="896" data-start="564"><span style="font-size:14px;"><span style="font-family:verdana;">St. Mary's then took a five-point lead three minutes into the second quarter. However, Mohawk answered with a three-pointer from
Maddie Anderson (Whitby, Ont.) and a layup from
Kendra Oliver (Ajax, Ont.), evening the score at 26-26. Late in the second quarter, the Lightning seized control of the momentum and led 38-29 at halftime.</span></span></p>
<p data-end="1055" data-start="898"><span style="font-size:14px;"><span style="font-family:verdana;">In the third, St. Mary's extended their lead to a game-high 12 points. The Mountaineers fought back, trimming the deficit to 52-46 by the end of the quarter.</span></span></p>
<p data-end="1246" data-start="1057"><span style="font-size:14px;"><span style="font-family:verdana;">With 3:45 remaining in the game, Mohawk tied the score at 55-55, and Oliver gave them a brief two-point advantage. However, St. Mary's closed out the game with a 10-0 run to secure the win.</span></span></p>
<p data-end="1461" data-start="1248"><span style="font-size:14px;"><span style="font-family:verdana;">
Angong Jacob (Calgary, AB) led the Mountaineers with 15 points. Oliver and Anderson both recorded double-doubles, with Oliver contributing 14 points and 16 rebounds, while Anderson added 12 points and 11 rebounds.</span></span></p>
<p data-end="1566" data-is-last-node="" data-is-only-node="" data-start="1463"><span style="font-size:14px;"><span style="font-family:verdana;">Mohawk will now face the Géants de Saint-Jean in the CCAA Bronze Semi-Final on March 14 at 5 p.m. (ET).</span></span></p>
