Matthew Ferreira named OCAA Athletic Administrator of the Year

HAMILTON, Ont.Matthew Ferreira, Director of Athletics and Recreation at Mohawk College, has been named the 2024-25 OCAA Athletic Administrator of the Year. This prestigious award, presented for the third time by the OCAA, marks the first occasion Ferreira has received the honour.

Now in his sixth year as athletic director at Mohawk, Ferreira has fostered an environment in which student-athletes excel academically while striving for athletic excellence. As a result, Mohawk has ranked top three for the most CCAA Academic All-Canadians for three consecutive years.

Under Ferreira's leadership, the 2024-25 season was historic for the Mountaineers. Mohawk claimed three OCAA Championships – an achievement not seen since the 1986-87 season – and earned five provincial team medals. The Mountaineers also secured three CCAA medals, a first for the department, and had three student-athletes drafted or sign professional contracts.

In addition, Ferreira spearheaded the launch of the Mountaineers Lacrosse Sixes program, the first of its kind in Canada. This new sport not only expanded the Athletic Department but also provided Mohawk students with unique opportunities to explore and engage Indigenous culture and traditions.

Ferreira has worked diligently to invest in both his coaching and department staff, fostering a culture of continuous improvement, raising overall performance standards and providing professional development opportunities.

"Matt's passion, energy, and unwavering commitment to the Mountaineer Athletics program have been instrumental to its success," said Mohawk College President, Paul Armstrong. "His leadership has inspired student-athletes, coaches, and staff to push past their limits and pursue excellence. This year, Mohawk Athletics experienced its most successful season to date, a clear testament to the effectiveness of his dedication to excellence."

Beyond athletics, Ferreira has played a key role in enhancing Mohawk's reputation in the community through athlete-led service initiatives. These initiatives include annual campaigns addressing local needs, hosting all-star games in collaboration with local school boards and the launch of the Mountaineer Academy.

Ferreira has also partnered with the Mohawk College Foundation to help launch a campaign supporting athletics. The campaign has secured vital resources for student-athletes while increasing youth engagement and expanding local programming – transforming the future of Mohawk Athletics.

"Receiving this award is a reflection of the hard work and dedication from our student-athletes, coaches, department staff, and the support from Mohawk's senior administration," said Ferreira. "This recognition highlights the growth of Mohawk Athletics in recent years – our success on the podium, academic achievements, and positive impact in the community."

As the 2024-25 OCAA Athletic Administrator of the Year, Ferreira's contributions to Mohawk Athletics have not only elevated the program but also made a lasting impact on the community. His leadership, dedication and commitment to excellence continue to inspire and shape the future of student-athletes at Mohawk, ensuring the program remains a source of pride and success for years to come.
