Mountaineers earn draw with late equalizer

HAMILTON, Ont. – The Mohawk Mountaineers men's soccer team salvaged a point with a 91st-minute goal to secure a 1-1 draw against the Redeemer Royals on Friday night.

Mohawk carried much of the play with their pace, generating several scoring chances. The Mountaineers held a slight edge in total shots, 15-13, with both sides recording 11 on target.

The match remained scoreless through the first half and into the early stages of the second. Redeemer broke the deadlock in the 70th minute when Cormac O'Brien converted a penalty, beating Mohawk goalkeeper Marco Ferrusi (Hamilton, Ont.) with a shot to the bottom right corner.
 
Mohawk responded with sustained pressure late in the match and were rewarded in stoppage time. Ignacio Torres (Burlington, Ont.) capitalized on a scramble in the box to score the equalizer, with Emidio Refosco (Hamilton, Ont.) picking up the assist.
 
Neither team was able to find a winner during the remaining added time.
 
The result moves Mohawk to 0-1-1 to start the 2025 season.
 
The Mountaineers return to action Sept. 14 when they visit the Fanshawe Falcons in London, Ont. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:15 p.m.
