Mountaineers draw Falcons with second half goal

LONDON, Ont. – The Mohawk Mountaineers men's soccer team earned their second straight draw, playing the Fanshawe Falcons to a 1-1 result on Sunday. The outcome also ended a 10-game losing skid to the Falcons that stretched back to 2016.

Despite an even opening half, Fanshawe broke through in the 42nd minute to tak a 1-0 lead into the break. Mohawk responded early in the second half when second-year forward Blake Ellis (Hamilton, Ont.) scored his first of the season in the 58th minute, assisted by Matthew Gennaccaro (Hamilton, Ont.)

The Falcons held a 16-12 edge in shots and a four-corner advantage, but Mohawk goalkeeper Marco Ferrusi (Hamilton, Ont.) stood tall once again, making seven saves to preserve the draw.

The Mountaineers now return home to face the St. Clair Saints on Sept. 19 at 8 p.m. at St. Mary Catholic Secondary School.
