Mountaineers secure first win of season

HAMILTON, Ont. – The Mohawk Mountaineers men's soccer team earned their first win of the season Saturday with a 2-0 victory over the Lambton Lions.

The result extends Mohawk's point streak to four games, moving their record to 1-1-3.

After a scoreless first half, the Mountaineers struck early in the second when Lambton was called for a handball in the box. Graydon Howie (Burlington, Ont.) converted the ensuing penalty to give Mohawk a 1-0 lead.

Despite controlling much of the play, the Mountaineers struggled to capitalize until the 75th minute, when Emidio Refosco (Hamilton, Ont.) set up Ben Bowden (Hamilton, Ont.) for the insurance marker.

Connor Miller (Hamilton, Ont.) made his OCAA debut in goal for Mohawk, stopping all four shots he faced to record the clean sheet.

The Mountaineers will return to action Sept. 24 in Vaughan, Ont., against the Humber Hawks at 7 p.m.
