HAMILTON, Ont. – The No. 2 nationally ranked Mohawk Mountaineers women's basketball team opened the second half of the season with a 90-56 victory over the Redeemer Royals on Saturday.
Four Mountaineers scored in double figures as Mohawk improved to 9-0 on the season. Malak Dahawy (Waterloo, Ont.) led the way with a season-high 19 points, one shy of her career high. Tiffany Williams (Hamilton, Ont.) added 16 points, while Maddie Anderson (Whitby, Ont.) scored 15 and Joanna Smith (Simcoe, Ont.) finished with 14.
Mohawk set the tone early, outscoring Redeemer 32-9 in the first quarter. The Mountaineers opened the game on a 10-2 run, later added a 10-0 stretch and closed the quarter with a 9-0 run to build a 23-point advantage.
The Mountaineers shot five-of-six from three-point range in the opening quarter but cooled off over the next two, combining to go two-of-13 from beyond the arc in the second and third quarters. Redeemer matched Mohawk during that stretch, with the Mountaineers margin growing slightly to 25-points.
Mohawk regained its rhythm in the final quarter, extending the lead to a game-high 34 points with 40 seconds remaining.
The Mountaineers capitalized on 28 Redeemer turnovers, scoring 34 points off miscues, and added 54 points in the paint.
All nine of Mohawk's wins this season have come by double digits, with the team's average point differential improving to 30 points.
Mohawk begins a three-game road stretch on Jan. 16, visiting the Lambton Lions in Sarnia, Ont., with tipoff scheduled for 6 p.m.
