OAKVILLE, Ont. – The Mohawk Mountaineers women's volleyball team earned its third win of the season Wednesday night, rallying to defeat the Sheridan Bruins 3-2.
Mohawk fell behind 2-1 in the match before responding with victories in the fourth and fifth sets to secure the win.
The Mountaineers set the tone early, opening the match with a 9-3 lead and forcing a Sheridan timeout in the first set. The Bruins closed the gap to within two on multiple occasions, but Mohawk maintained control to claim the opening set 25-17.
Sheridan answered in the second set, jumping out to a 9-3 lead and forcing a Mohawk timeout. The deficit grew to 13-4 and proved too much to overcome as the Bruins evened the match with a 25-17 win.
Another slow start followed for Mohawk in the third set as Sheridan built a 6-1 advantage and later extended the lead to seven. The Mountaineers battled back to tie the score at 13-13, but were unable to pull ahead and dropped the set 25-21.
Set four was tightly contested early, with the teams trading points before Mohawk pulled ahead 19-14. Sheridan narrowed the gap to two, but the Mountaineers closed out the set 25-19 to force a decisive fifth set.
In the final set, Sheridan took an early 4-1 lead, but Mohawk responded and led 8-7 at the side switch. The Mountaineers then scored seven of the final nine points to earn a 15-9 victory and clinch the match.
Avery McConkey (Stratford, Ont.) led the Mountaineers offensively with 15 kills and Olivia Rosewell (Hamilton, Ont.) set a new season high with 14 kills. Setter Kyrah Cameron (Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ont.) recorded a career-high 46 assists.
Mohawk will look to extend its two-match winning streak on Jan. 16 when they visit the Conestoga Condors in Kitchener, Ont., at 6 p.m.
