WINDSOR, Ont. – The Mohawk Mountaineers men's basketball team dropped the back end of a back-to-back, falling 93-77 to the St. Clair Saints on Saturday.
Mohawk was unable to recover from a strong opening quarter by the Saints, who took a 27-16 lead after the first. A 12-2 St. Clair run proved to be the difference in the frame.
The Mountaineers attempted to rally in the second quarter behind Jerry Jr. Mercury (Scarborough, Ont.), who scored nine points. Despite holding St. Clair to 33.3 per cent shooting in the quarter, Mohawk went into halftime trailing 46-36.
Both teams found success offensively in the third quarter, but St. Clair maintained control and later pushed its lead to a game-high 20 points with 6:48 remaining in the fourth.
Mohawk was unable to overcome the deficit, shooting 34.7 per cent for the game, while St. Clair finished at 46.7 per cent from the field.
Scott Jenkins (Hamilton, Ont.) led the Mountaineers with 17 points. Mercury added 16, while Kazim Raza (Markham, Ont.) and Dante Richards (Oakville, Ont.) each finished with 11 points.
The Mountaineers will look to return to the win column on Jan. 21 when they visit the Niagara Knights in Welland, Ont. Tipoff is scheduled for 8 p.m.
