Chong’s late three lifts Mountaineers to victory

HAMILTON, Ont. – Iverson Chong scored five straight points in the final two minutes, including the go-ahead three-pointer, as the Mohawk Mountaineers men's basketball team defeated the Conestoga Condors 75-68 on Wednesday night.

With the score tied 68-68, Chong (Oakville, Ont.) buried a three with 1:20 remaining, then drove to the basket for a layup to extend the Mountaineers' lead to five. Kazim Raza (Markham, Ont.) sealed the win at the free-throw line in the closing seconds.

Mohawk had several chances to pull away throughout the game, but Conestoga continued to respond. The contest featured 12 lead changes and six ties.

The Mountaineers jumped out to an 8-2 lead before an 8-0 Condors run produced the first lead change. Chong, Jerry Jr. Mercury (Scarborough, Ont.) and Jailen Jackson (Hamilton, Ont.) each hit late three-pointers in the first quarter to give Mohawk an 18-14 lead after 10 minutes.

Mohawk built its lead to seven early in the second quarter, but Conestoga regained momentum and moved in front 30-28 with 3:23 remaining in the half. Chong answered with a three, and a 12-5 Mountaineers run to close the quarter sent Mohawk into halftime with a 40-35 advantage.

Conestoga controlled the third quarter, outscoring Mohawk to take a 59-55 lead heading into the final frame. The Condors shot 61.5 per cent in the quarter, while the Mountaineers managed just 19 per cent.

Mohawk opened the fourth with a 5-0 run to regain the lead. Conestoga briefly went back in front before Scott Jenkins (Hamilton, Ont.) hit a three with 3:14 remaining to put Mohawk ahead 68-67. Terell Lloyd was sent to the free-throw line shortly after, but split the pair to tie the game, setting the stage for Chong's late heroics.

Marko Dosen (Hamilton, Ont.) led all scorers with 18 points and added seven rebounds. Chong finished with 15 points, while Raza chipped in 11.

Mohawk returns to action on Jan. 31 when it hosts the No. 2 nationally ranked Humber Hawks. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m.
