HAMILTON, Ont. – The Mohawk Mountaineers men's basketball team dominated from start to finish, defeating the No. 2 nationally ranked Humber Hawks 101-66 on Saturday.
The 35-point win marked Mohawk's third-largest victory of the season and just the second loss suffered by the Hawks.
After both teams were held scoreless through the first two minutes, Scott Jenkins (Hamilton, Ont.) opened the scoring with a three-pointer. Humber answered with a triple of its own, but Dante Richards (Oakville, Ont.) responded to restore Mohawk's lead. The Mountaineers went on to control the game from that point forward, leading 16-11 after the first quarter.
Mohawk locked in defensively in the second, holding the Hawks to 26.7 per cent shooting and forcing seven turnovers. The Mountaineers shot 47.4 per cent from the field and knocked down three three-pointers to extend their lead to 20 at halftime.
The third quarter featured lights-out shooting from Mohawk, which connected on 72.2 per cent of its field-goal attempts and drained six three-pointers. The Mountaineers opened the half on an 11-0 run, highlighted by threes from Marko Dosen (Hamilton, Ont.), Iverson Chong (Oakville, Ont.) and Jenkins, to take a commanding 77-46 lead into the fourth.
Mohawk led by as many as 38 with 2:59 remaining and never looked back against the second-ranked team in the country. The Mountaineers scored 24 points off 22 Humber turnovers and outscored the Hawks by 22 in the paint. Mohawk also knocked down 13 three-pointers, tying its season high set Nov. 19, also against Humber.
Dosen led the Mountaineers with 19 points. Jerry Jr. Mercury (Scarborough, Ont.) recorded his second double-double of the season with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Jenkins, Richards and Kazim Raza (Markham, Ont.) each hit three three-pointers.
With the win, Mohawk remains in strong position to secure a top-three finish in the OCAA West Division with two games remaining.
The Mountaineers return to action Feb. 7 when they host the Sheridan Bruins. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m.
