HAMILTON, Ont. – The No. 1 nationally ranked Mohawk Mountaineers women's basketball team suffered its first loss of the 2025-26 season, falling 79-58 to the No. 14 Humber Hawks on Saturday.
Despite the setback, the Mountaineers still control their own destiny for a potential first-place finish in the OCAA West Division heading into the playoffs. Mohawk is now 13-1 with two regular season games remaining.
Mohawk fell behind 6-0 in the opening minutes but answered with a 9-2 run to take a one-point lead. Humber responded, however, and closed the first quarter on top 19-11.
The Mountaineers continued to struggle offensively in the second quarter, shooting 21.4 per cent from the field. Humber also had difficulty finding its rhythm, shooting 27.3 per cent, but Mohawk's eight turnovers in the quarter allowed the Hawks to extend their lead to 35-23 at halftime.
Trailing by 12 to start the third quarter, Kendra Oliver (Ajax, Ont.) scored on back-to-back possessions to pull Mohawk within eight. Humber quickly pushed the lead back to 15 before the Mountaineers closed the quarter on an 8-0 run, highlighted by consecutive three-pointers from Malak Dahawy (Waterloo, Ont.) and Sydney Drain (Tweed, Ont.). Mohawk still trailed by 11 heading into the fourth.
Two minutes into the final frame, the Mountaineers cut the deficit to seven, but the Hawks responded with a decisive run to stretch the lead to a game-high 21 late in the quarter.
Ball security proved costly for Mohawk, which turned the ball over 31 times compared to Humber's 12.
Oliver recorded a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds, while Maddie Anderson (Whitby, Ont.) led the Mountaineers with 15 points.
Mohawk will look to rebound Feb. 7 when it hosts the Sheridan Bruins in its final regular-season home game. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m.
