HAMILTON, Ont. – The No. 3 nationally ranked Mohawk Mountaineers women's basketball team set two program records Saturday, defeating the Sheridan Bruins 111-27.
The 111 points mark the most scored by Mohawk in a regular-season game, while the 84-point margin of victory is also a program best.
On Jan. 3, the Mountaineers scored 118 points in an exhibition game against the Georgian Grizzlies, but Saturday's result marked the first time the program reached the century mark in regular-season or playoff play.
Mohawk opened the game on a 32-3 run in the first quarter, holding Sheridan to 1-of-16 shooting and forcing 13 turnovers.
The Mountaineers continued to dominate in the second quarter, keeping the Bruins scoreless for nine minutes and 30 seconds. The Mountaineers went into halftime ahead 53-8.
Mohawk outscored Sheridan 28-6 in the third quarter and 30-13 in the fourth to close out the win.
The Mountaineers finished with a season-high 14 three-pointers, held the Bruins to 16.4 per cent shooting and forced 36 turnovers. Mohawk also scored 60 points in the paint and received 44 points from its bench.
The victory fell short of the OCAA record for largest margin of victory of 99 points, set by the Humber Hawks on Jan. 19, 2018, when they defeated the Lambton Lions 125-26.
Maddie Anderson (Whitby, Ont.) led all scorers with 27 points, knocking down five three-pointers in 27 minutes. Joanna Smith (Simcoe, Ont.) added 22 points and five steals. Tiffany Williams (Hamilton, Ont.) recorded 20 points and nine rebounds, while Kendra Oliver (Ajax, Ont.) posted a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds.
Mohawk improved to 14-1 and will look to secure the top seed in the OCAA West Division in its final regular-season game Feb. 11 against the Fanshawe Falcons at 6 p.m. in London, Ont.
