Mountaineers curling teams earn No. 2 seeds ahead of semifinals

MISSISSAUGA, Ont. – The Mohawk Mountaineers men's and women's curling teams wrapped up round-robin play at the OCAA Championships with identical 4-1 records, tying for the best marks in their respective divisions but settling for No. 2 seeds heading into the semifinals.

The women opened Day 3 with a dominant 10-1 victory over the Sault Cougars. Mohawk built a 6-1 lead through five ends before adding four more points in the sixth to close out the match.

In their final round-robin game, the Mountaineers fell 9-1 to the Niagara Knights. Niagara jumped out to a 9-0 lead through five ends. Mohawk scored one in the sixth, but the teams shook hands to end the match at 9-1.

On the men's side, Mohawk dropped a close 7-5 decision to the Cougars. The Mountaineers led 3-0 through two ends, with Sault scoring in the third. Mohawk added one in the fourth, but the Cougars responded with three in the fifth and one in the sixth to take a 5-4 lead. Mohawk forced an eighth end with a point in the seventh, but Sault scored twice in the extra end to secure the win.

The loss ended Mohawk's undefeated run and moved Sault ahead of the Mountaineers in the standings.

Mohawk's men closed the round robin with a 7-4 win over the Niagara Knights. The Mountaineers led 7-1 after five ends. Niagara scored two in the sixth and one in the seventh before the teams shook hands.

Both Mohawk teams will face the Humber Hawks in their semi-final matches on Feb. 7 at 10 a.m. at the Dixie Curling Centre.
