Mohawk men's soccer looks to upset reigning champs

(HAMILTON) - Mohawk Mountaineers men's soccer played to a 2-6-2 record during the 2023 OCAA season, earning themselves the seventh seed in the west division. Their playoff path begins Oct. 18 when they travel to play the No. 9 nationally ranked Humber Hawks at the Ontario Soccer Centre.

The Matchup:

Mohawk's 2-6-2 record is one win better than a season ago when the Mountaineers missed the OCAA playoffs.

The Hawks finished 2023 with a 7-1-2 record and claimed the second seed in the OCAA west division. They enter playoffs having won four consecutive provincial championships and 10 of the last 12.

Previous Matchup:

Mohawk and Humber matched up once this season, ending in a 1-1 draw. The Hawks opened the scoring in that match in the 49^th minute. The Mountaineers were able to bring it even in the 77^th minute when Hamza Salman (Hamilton, ON) found the back of the net.

Oliver Steinke (Dundas, ON) was spectacular for Mohawk, making six saves.

History:

Dating back to the 2009 season, Humber has controlled the matchup, winning eight of 10 regular season matches.

The Mountaineers last win over the Hawks came on Oct. 15, 2008 when Mohawk secured a 6-3 win.

The OCAA qualifying match between the Mountaineers and Hawks will kick-off at 4:30 p.m. on Oct. 18 at the Ontario Soccer Centre in Vaughan, ON.
