Mountaineers men’s curling victorious in first 2023-24 bonspiel

Mohawk goes undefeated versus Canadian universities

(GUELPH) – Mohawk Mountaineers men's curling competed in their first post-secondary bonspiel of the 2023-24 season over the weekend, winning all six matches to place first overall.

Participating in the University of Guelph Bonspiel, all six matches for the Mountaineers were versus U Sports institutions.

On the opening day (Nov. 11) of the bonspiel Mohawk immediately showed dominance with a 6-0 victory over the Trent Excalibur and then a 6-1 win against the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks. In the final match of pool play and of the day the Mountaineers won a close 5-3 match over the Brock Badgers.

Day two (Nov. 12) of the bonspiel was win-or-go-home and Mohawk kept the momentum going. They defeated the Toronto Varsity Blues 4-3 in the quarter-final match and then won 8-1 against the Waterloo Warriors to advance to the bonspiel final.

The Mountaineers would matchup versus the Badgers again, and this time came away with a convincing 7-2 win.

Mohawk women's curling also participated at the bonspiel, losing 6-4 in their opening match versus the York Lions. They'd also lose their next two matches to the Badgers and TMU Bold.

The Mountaineers curling program will continue to gear up for OCAA competition with the provincial championships taking place between February 7-10, 2024 in Sault Ste. Marie, ON.
