Mountaineers men’s curling clinch top seed ahead of CCAA playoffs

Mohawk splits final round robin games

FREDERICTON, NB – Mohawk Mountaineers men's curling finished round robin play at the 2024 CCAA/Curling Canada College Championships with a 6-1 record and have clinched the top seed ahead of playoff action.

On day four of the bonspiel the Mountaineers defeated the Assiniboine Cougars 8-1 for their sixth victory, but a perfect record was halted by the SAIT Trojans, who defeated Mohawk 6-4.

In the matchup versus the Cougars, the Mountaineers only allowed a point in the fourth end. Mohawk would score two in the second, fifth and eighth, while adding one each in the sixth and seventh for the win.

The Trojans, however, have been the Mountaineers kryptonite going back to the 2023 Nationals. That year SAIT not only handed Mohawk their lone round robin loss – similar to this year – but also defeated them in the semifinals.

While the Mountaineers found themselves leading 1-0 after three ends in this years round robin game, the Trojans answered with two in the fifth. Mohawk would score one in the fifth to even the match 2-2 but SAIT scored two in the sixth to regain a 4-2 advantage.

The Mountaineers would tie it at 4-4 after a point each in the seventh and eighth, but the Trojans just simply had their number. SAIT scored one in the ninth and capped the match with a point in the 10^th.

As the one seed Mohawk draws the NAIT Ooks in the semi-final round set to take place Mar. 16 at 8:30 a.m. The Mountaineers defeated the Ooks 13-5 in their round robin matchup.

Mohawk women's curling end the 2024 championships with a win-less record following a 13-4 loss to the SAIT Trojans and a 13-6 loss to the Fanshawe Falcons.
