Mountaineers comeback falls short at home

First half goals cost Mohawk in cross-city rival matchup

Box Score

(HAMILTON) – Mohawk Mountaineers men's soccer lost 2-1 in a cross-city matchup against the Redeemer Royals.

The Royals kicked off the match by finding the net in the 11th minute, and added another goal in the 30th minute, securing a 2-0 lead at halftime.

The Mountaineers tightened up their defence in the second half, preventing any further goals.

Nicholas Tavares (Milton, ON) managed to score Mohawk's lone goal in the 81st minute. Unfortunately, it wasn't enough for the team to secure a victory, as the final score ended 2-1 for the Royals.

"We slacked off in the first half," Tavares said. "We definitely turned it up in the second half. Getting a goal was nice but it unfortunately wasn't enough to bring home a win tonight."

Head coach Jordan Brown echoed Tavares' thoughts on the rough first half.

"We didn't quite stick to the game plan and it cost us unfortunately," Brown said.

Next up for the Mountaineers is a matchup on the road versus the Conestoga Condors on Sept. 30 at 3 p.m.
