Mohawk College Mountaineers launch a new look to mark a new era

Mountaineers rebrand includes new logo, colour scheme, gym floor and much more

(HAMILTON)The Mohawk College Mountaineers are opening the new year with a new look for Athletics and Recreation programs.

The Mohawk College Department of Athletics and Recreation officially announced today a new logo and colour scheme, to be represented on uniforms, signage and all other Mountaineers-branded applications. Supporting this new era for Athletics and Recreation at the college, the department has launched two new websites and a Mountaineers Sports Network radio show on INDI 101.5 – the home of Mohawk's student-run radio station.

Since the post-pandemic return to activities, Mohawk Athletics and Recreation has rebuilt the department with new staff and coaches, putting the department in a stronger position to shape winning programs and ensuring student-athletes can succeed in competition and in the classroom. The new branding represents a renewed commitment to athletic and personal excellence.

"Over the last two years we've built a framework to immerse our student-athletes in an environment where they can achieve high performance in and out of competition," said Matthew Ferreira, Director of Athletics and Recreation. "Our culture has started to emerge as a defining factor in our identity. We now have a brand to match that identity."

The new M logo is designed to represent Mountaineer pride and a sense of nostalgia, while the burnt orange gradient represents burning embers – showcasing the ever-burning heart of the Mountaineer student-athletes. The steel grey font colour in the logo highlighting 'Mountaineers' represents the City of Hamilton, the 'Steel City' built with grit, hard work and perseverance – which Mohawk Athletics culture emulates. The new uniforms for all nine high-performance varsity teams will feature the new logo and colours.

"We are committed to creating a world-class student experience for all Mohawk College students and I hope this brand will instill a sense of pride and excellence in them all, strengthening the resolve of Mountaineers student-athletes and inspiring a more engaged and passionate fan base," said Katie Burrows, Vice President, Students, International and Alumni. "This new brand offers a renewed sense of energy, unity, and excellence for students, athletes, alumni, and faculty alike. I am confident it will ignite school spirit and bolster a sense of community across the college."

With the start of the 2023 Fall semester, the public will see a new look at David Braley Athletic and Recreation Centre (DBARC) with renovated gymnasium floors that feature the new logo and new branding designs throughout the facility, provided by Swire Photo and Design and Pauliegraphics.

The remaining stages of the rebranding plans, including refining other areas in the DBARC, will take place throughout the next year and will be completed by September 2024.

"Mohawk College's new logo honours the Mountaineer legacy, while continuing to move our Athletics department forward in its growth and transformation," said Louisa Drost, Dean of Students. "The DBARC space helps to create a sense of belonging while supporting the wellbeing of our college community."

The development of two new websites will provide the Athletics and Recreation programs with their own spaces to better support the needs of students and the community. The new one-hour Mountaineers Sports Network radio show on INIDI 101.5 will broadcast its first episode on September 13 at noon. It will hold the Wednesday noon timeslot throughout the Fall semester.

The rebranding process involved numerous focus groups consisting of current Mohawk students, college alumni, varsity athletes, and coaches, as well as the college executive team.

"We may have a new look, but our objective remains the same, to compete and win," said Ferreira. "This new era is about performing in the classroom, being podium relevant, giving back to our city and becoming leaders in our campus community, and the Athletics platform will be the conduit that brings it all together."
