Mountaineers win six of nine at hometown Bonspiel

Mohawk men’s curling goes undefeated against OCAA opponents

HAMILTON – Mohawk Mountaineers curling had a successful day on Saturday at the first annual Mohawk Invitational Bonspiel.
 
The Mountaineers men's curling team, also recognized as the reigning back-to-back OCAA Champions, posted a 3-0 record at the Dundas Valley Golf and Curling Club. Mohawk's mixed doubles team won two of three matches, while the women's team came out victorious once.
 
In their opening match of the day the Mohawk men's team defeated the Fanshawe Falcons 17-1. Their second game versus the Sault Cougars was a much more strategic matchup, but the Mountaineers pulled out a 4-2 win and closed out the day defeating the Humber Hawks 8-3.
 
The mixed doubles team started their day with a 6-3 victory over Sault-1, but would lose 7-0 to Sault's second mixed doubles team. The Mountaineers in their final match defeated the Hawks 5-2.
 
This season Mohawk features a women's team for the first time since 2019. The Mountaineers announced their return in a big way defeating the Falcons 10-7. In the final two games of the Mohawk was tested by a strong Hawks team, losing 11-1, and then lost to the McMaster Marauders of U Sports 14-0.
 
The Mountaineers will now prepare for the OCAA Championships set to take place in Sault Ste. Marie from Feb. 7-10.
