Playoff Preview: Mountaineers meet No. 1 Hawks in qualifying round

HAMILTON, Ont. – For the second consecutive year, the Mohawk Mountaineers men's soccer team will play the Humber Hawks in the opening round of OCAA Playoffs.

The two teams will kick-off in the qualifying round on Oct. 16 at 4:30 p.m. with the No. 1 nationally ranked Hawks hosting at the Ontario Soccer Centre in Vaughan, Ont.

The Matchup:

Mohawk began the 2024 season with a win and draw on opening weekend, but proceeded to lose their final eight matches. They finished the season 1-8-1 and come into playoffs as the OCAA west division eight seed.

On the other hand, it was a near perfect season for Humber. They wrapped up the regular season with a 9-0-1 record, the best record in the OCAA and earned the No. 1 position in the CCAA national rankings. The Hawks have reached the OCAA Championship match in six straight years, winning five of them.

Last Meeting:

These two teams met on Oct. 5 this season at Tim Hortons Field with Humber defeating Mohawk 4-0. The Mountaineers played one of their best half's in the first 45 minutes of the match as the two teams went into halftime tied 0-0. It all began to fall apart for Mohawk after Humber scored in the 75^th minute. The Hawks would score again three minutes later, and add two more before the final whistle.

When these two teams met last year in the qualifying round, Humber would also win that match 4-0. The Hawks scored early to take a 1-0 first half lead, with the next three scores coming in the second half.

Mohawk's last win versus Humber came on Oct. 15, 2008.
