Mountaineers pickup five set victory over Condors

Box Score HAMILTON, Ont. – The Mohawk Mountaineers women's volleyball team picked up their third consecutive win to start the 2024-25 season after defeating the Conestoga Condors 3-2 (25-11, 25-20, 28-26, 18-25, 15-10).
 
Mohawk came out with all the momentum in the opening set, leading the entire way after the two teams were tied 1-1. The Mountaineers held a small 8-7 advantage and went on to score seven straight to grow their lead to 15-8. Mohawk was able to easily closeout the set from there.
 
In set two the Mountaineers took an early 7-4 lead to force a Condors timeout, which Conestoga used to build their own momentum, scoring five straight to go up 9-7. Mohawk responded with a 8-1 run to lead 15-10 and that was enough of a lead for the Mountaineers to hold on for a set two win.
 
The Condors looked like a brand-new team in the third set as they defended the Mountaineers well. Conestoga held an early lead, but Mohawk was able to respond to take a 16-15 lead. The set went back and forth for a moment before the Condors found themselves up 24-19. It was then the Mountaineers who responded with five straight. Conestoga had four set points before closing out the third for the win.
 
After a fourth set that was easily controlled by the Condors, the two teams traded momentum in a fifth and deciding set. Down 8-7, the Mountaineers scored eight of the next 10 points to win the match.
 
Thea Spasic (Hamilton, Ont.) led Mohawk with 14 kills and Olivia Rosewell (Hamilton, Ont.) was also impressive offensively with 10 kills. Megan Battersby (Welland, Ont.) had a season-best 29 assists.
 
The Mountaineers will be back at home for their next match, hosting the Niagara Knights on Oct. 30 at 6 p.m.
