Mohawk extends win streak to two

Box Score HAMILTON – Mohawk Mountaineers women's volleyball's 3-1 (25-20, 25-23, 15-25, 25-22) victory versus the Niagara Knights on Wednesday night had major implications to the OCAA West division playoff picture.

For the Mountaineers the win keeps their hopes to a host a playoff match at home alive. They'll need a lot of help from others, specifically for the Conestoga Condors to lose their final two remaining games, for any chance to host.

Mohawk with the victory hosts a 10-7 record, now tied with Niagara.

The Mountaineers came out strong versus the Knights, taking a convincing lead in the first set and carried the momentum for a win. Mohawk would do the same in the early parts of the second set, but Niagara began to find some momentum to make it close.

In the third set the Knights had the Mountaineers on their heels throughout to extend the match.

Mohawk settled back in during the fourth to claim victory.

Rachel Vanderwal (Hamilton, ON) was particularly important to the Mountaineers success, finishing with 16 kills. Lexie Zicari (Burlington, ON) had 13 kills in the match and Chelsea Vanderwal (Waterdown, ON) had a career-best 44 assists.

Mohawk will close out their regular season at home in the DBARC on Feb. 3 when they host the Humber Hawks at 1 p.m.
