Mountaineers men’s curling win third straight OCAA Championship

Mohawk defeats Humber to earn gold medal at provincial championship

SAULT STE. MARIE – Mohawk Mountaineers men's curling has claimed the OCAA Championship for the third straight year after defeating the Humber Hawks 9-3.

The Mountaineers have also clinched their spot to the 2024 CCAA/Curling Canada Curling Championships in Fredericton, NB from March 17-22.

Along with the provincial gold, Mohawk received numerous individual accolades highlighted by Jacob Jones (Brantford, ON) earning OCAA Men's Curling Most Valuable Player for the third consecutive year.

Jones and Liam Little (Haliburton, ON) were named OCAA First-Team Championship All-Stars, while Joel Matthews (Waterdown, ON) and Eric Just (Ancaster, ON) claimed OCAA Second-Team Championship All-Star nods.

Mohawk head coach Betty Calic was also named the OCAA Men's Curling Coach of the Year – the third year in a row she has been the recipient of that award.

To earn their spot into the gold medal match, the Mountaineers defeated the Sault Cougars 7-6. The match got off to a great start for Mohawk, picking up four points in the first end. By the end of the fourth set the Mountaineers led 5-4. Both teams would trade points between the fifth and eighth ends but Mohawk held on to their one-point advantage for the victory.

The Mountaineers and Hawks met in the gold game for the fourth straight year with Mohawk now having come out on top in the last three. This year the Mountaineers knocked off the Hawks 9-3.

Humber gave the defending champs a scare by going up 3-1 after three ends, but Mohawk secured two points in the fourth and sixth ends to go up 5-3. The Mountaineers would score another in the seventh and clinch the banner with three points in the eighth end.

Mohawk men's curling now has six OCAA gold medals in program history.

They will look to add another medal at the CCAA/Curling Canada Curling Championships in March. Last year the Mountaineers won a CCAA bronze medal.
